🌏 40 birders, 50 blocks, one mission: Documenting Puducherry's birds!
Just completed an incredible citizen science initiative - the Puducherry Bird Atlas (Dec 25-28, 2025)!
Approximately 40 bird enthusiasts, volunteers, and ornithologists came together to systematically survey the entire Puducherry territory, which was divided into 50 blocks for comprehensive coverage. Over four days, teams fanned out across diverse habitats conducting structured field surveys to document every bird species we could find.
Each block represented a unique ecosystem - coastal areas, urban parks, wetlands, agricultural fields. The coordination required to cover 50 blocks with 40 participants was impressive, and seeing everyone's checklists come together on eBird to form a complete picture of Puducherry's avian diversity was deeply satisfying.
The Puducherry Bird Atlas aims to generate baseline data on species richness, distribution, and seasonal patterns - crucial for long-term biodiversity monitoring and conservation planning. This data will serve researchers, policymakers, and conservation practitioners while also fostering greater community engagement in avian conservation and ecosystem health.
This project reinforced my belief in the power of collective action in science. When citizen scientists work systematically with proper protocols, we can generate data that rivals professional surveys - and build a community passionate about conservation in the process.
