Proud to Have Contributed to Kerala's First Meenachil River Otter Survey!
I recently had the privilege of participating in the pioneering otter survey along the Meenachil River in Kottayam, organized by TIES (Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences) in collaboration with CWRDM, the Kerala Forest Department's Social Forestry wing, and the Kerala State Biodiversity Board.
This first-of-its-kind survey, conducted on December 6-7, 2025, combined a workshop and extensive field surveys to document smooth-coated otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) populations and assess human-wildlife interactions. Our team documented 5-10 otter families in the Pala, Mutholy, Chempilavu, and Kidangoor regions, and an impressive 20-25 otter groups in the downstream stretches from Pampady and Malarikkal to Kumarakom.
We observed that otter density was notably higher in areas with extensive open land along riverbanks and near the Vembanad Lake confluence. The survey also revealed critical human-otter conflict zones, particularly between Kidangoor and Kumarakom, where residents have reported frequent otter encounters and attacks.
Our findings led to actionable recommendations including riverbank afforestation, wildlife compensation mechanisms, and support for affected fishing communities. This collaborative effort, led by experts including Dr. Devanand, Dr. Chandni, and the TIES-CWRDM team, represents an important step toward balancing biodiversity conservation with community well-being.
Grateful to be part of this meaningful conservation initiative that bridges scientific research with community engagement!
